Enhancing SQL Server Notification Services with RSS Feeds

Why notifications via RSS Feeds ?

So, who needs an notification via an RSS Feed when SQL Server notification services provide multiple ways of delivering important SQL Server notifications to the device of your choice? Well, often times the quest is to provide a better way of doing things not necessarily provide a way to do things that are not being done. In that regard we thing that an RSS feed provides a better way to receiving and organizing SQL Server notifications, and there is more, as you will read below we have "extended" the concept to allow you to get not just SQL Server notifications but really any information out of SQL Server in the form of a standard RSS feed directly to any connected device.

RSS Reporter for SQL Server

RSS Reporter for SQL Server allows you to generate standard RSS feeds containing information regarding SQL Server jobs like the current status of the job, job details, historical status; feeds containing information generated by ad-hoc T-SQL queries as well as feeds that contain SQL Server database size and space allocation information. The RSS Reported is installed on a server that is running IIS - any user that has credentials to connect to certain SQL Server instances and view job information can create a profile on the RSS Reporter. The profile for each user contains a list of SQL Server instances, the authentication method, necessary credentials for connecting to each instance, and basic configuration settings. RSS Reporter automatically generates a set of predefined RSS feeds that are further described in the feeds section of this help document.

Ad-hoc query feeds

While the predefined RSS feeds with SQL Server job information and those with SQL Server database size and space allocation are very helpful we think the best feature of RSS Reporter for SQL Server is the ability to turn the output of any T-SQL query you choose into a standard RSS feed. In fact, you can yourselft generate the job information as well as the database size and space allocation feeds we have created for you by using the ad-hoc query capability of RSS Reporter for SQL Server. Furthermore, you will not find a more convenient way of providing ad-hoc reports to other people in your organization - simply dump the query into RSS Reporter for SQL Server and voila you have an RSS feed - simply send the url link to the people you want and they have their report.
